Shedding out! It’s that time of year!

I started shedding out Denver and Pirate this weekend. Denver, an American Saddlebred is a pretty typical customer when it comes to shedding, but his love of rolling in the mud adds a “special” dimension! But when it comes to Pirate, our Gypsy Vanner…well that’s a whole different story altogether.

 

Yesterday began Phase 1. After about an hour of getting the surface stuff off, I looked on the ground, and saw that I’d almost created another Gypsy Vanner!

Time…not Temperature

When I first entered the horse world, and experienced “grooming throughout the seasons” I was amazed to learn that it’s time, not temperature that triggers shedding. That is, as daylight stretches further into evening hours, horse biology says “get rid of that winter coat!”

And, boy do they ever!

There are some things that can speed up the shedding process, like keeping horses in work. Horses that exercise often shed out more quickly because of the additional blood flow to the skin.
